WESTMORLAND MOTOR CLUB – BARBON MANOR HILLCLIMB 12TH MAY 2007

Rounds 5 & 6 of the Nicholson McLaren Aviation British Hillclimb Championship were held at Barbon Manor near Kirkby Lonsdale on Saturday 12th May.

After the damp practice runs conditions started to improve which enabled Martin Groves to take FTD with a time of 20.71 seconds - just 0.2sec outside the hill record.

Groves, who drives a 650bhp Gould GR55B, won Round 5 with ease but was closely followed by Scott Moran of Ludlow driving a similar Gould GR61X. 3rd place was taken by Paul Ranson who co-drives the GR55B with Groves. The first six were covered by less than a second and worthy of note was the effort of Hamish Lindsay in the tiny one litre Jedi who outgunned 16 competitors with more powerful cars.

In Round 6 the top two places were reversed with Scott Moran taking the win from Groves who made a slight error at the first corner. Third place was claimed by Chris Merrick, a retired policeman from Stroud, who put his Judd powered Gould ahead of the rest. This second run-off was even more competitive with the first 8 being covered by less than a second.

Class 5 entrant Geoff Twemlow who competes in a road legal Subaru Impreza drove it all the way from Cornwall. He was just beaten into 2nd place by Hagley & District Light Car Club member Graham Loakes in a similar car.

Class 6 was won by Ulverston resident Keith Edwards who drives a ‘fire breathing’ turbocharged Audi Quattro. This vehicle was constructed by Dialynx and is a replica of the Group B Short Wheel Base Rally cars.

Broughton in Furness resident Peter Speakman finished a respectable 8th after having an oil leak in practice with his 1300cc Force-Suzuki. This is Peter’s first full season with the car and sees him return to single seaters after many years peddling the historic Chapman Mercury Special
